2008 – Year of Net Video
The past few days – with all of the Joost invites that I have been sending out – it seems that the prediction for 2008 as the year of net video might be on its way.
The CNET item tonight was the first dark cloud in that vision.
The story above involves packet shaping and traffic slowdown in the network by the local ISP. Already it has been charged that some ISP’s in Canada are on to the practice – a story on the show a few months ago.
The pressure of the MPAA to restrain bittorrent traffic, presumably being used for illegal transmission of pirated films, has already endangered legitimate uses such as distribution of Linux disk images or other large files. The totally legit traffic from Joost (or for that matter Skype or other P2P technology) falls under the same broad packet shaping axe.
If there is one thing that can derail technologies like Joost, it is the violation of net neutrality handling traffic. Unfortunately, it will be a battle of Titans – Viacom versus Verizon that will determine the outcome. Consumers will end up at the short end of the stick: it is only a question of who has the firmer grip on the other end.
