Is 2008 the Year of IPTV ?
The addition of Pirate Bay’s service annoucement -given their previous record on copyright issues – should give plenty of worry in various quarters.
Even though the normal intertia and resistance to change is evident in the adoption of IPTV (video delivered by Internet Protocol), there is an underlying combination of events that might just generate a tipping point.
It is simply the combination of two or three of today’s news items, combined with the slightest of legal and regulatory nudges:
1. Telework and the Federal Government: If the Senate Bill becomes law, the default is that telework for government employees is permitted unless a manager finds it to be unworkable. Today’s existing law is the exact converse – telework forbidden unless a case is made for use.
2. Gasoline at $3.50, approaching $4.50 or higher.
3. Commute times at extreme levels not in just one or two large cities, but overall.
4. Growth rates in broadband – 5% per quarter for the first quarter of 2007.
(I know, that is four not two or three).
Those pipes are just waiting for AppleTV, Joost, Pirate Bay, YouTube, MyTV and a score of others/ And there are two hours or more of commute time reclaimed each day.
It adds up quickly.
