Different Time – Different World
The two items – the Forbes Article on Pirate Bay et al, and the AACS revision defeated before it is released – go together nicely.
It is hard to believe that anyone who is even a casual observer of the events since Napster – has to know that there is a broken business model afoot.
Dog years are a pretty good measure of technology generations. I often tell friends and family, when they ask about upgrades or replacements for their Dell box from 2004- How much money would you put into a 21 year old car ? At what point would the engine replacement not solve the problem of the transmission – and or the ball joint replacement cost more than the car is worth ?
The business model of the music business and now the motion picture business has been under attack for over a dog’s life. In fact in dog years, Napster and its spawn are approaching a good middle age.
Now, according to the Wall Street Journal – there is a real possiblity of a major strike of the Writers and Actors Guilds later this year, and the studios are ready.
There are now alternate distribution channels, for the first time – Joost is just one of them. And there might be our first chance, in dog years – to see if this dog can hunt.
