      More Cracks on the Way

The item from Ars Technica – relating a hardware based crack for the AACS HD-DVD, using a modifed XBox 360 external drive – is a good example of the continued futility of hardware or software based DRM.

It’s a lot like the terrorist situation. While there are hundreds of thousands of failed cracking attempts around the world by tens of thousands of hackers, only one has to be good and/or lucky.

And, he has to be lucky just once – because once it is proven to work, and can be replicated by others – it’s going to be a very short time before it gets spread around the world.

That means that the solution to the problem is not going to be found in the next generation of DRM. The laws of economics have made DDos attacks far less prevalent than phishing – simply because botnets are placed at less risk and deployed more effectively than brute force extortion.

You want a final solution to DRM ? Just figure out the economic scenario that encourages and rewards the outcome you seek. It’s called a new business model, and it is sorely needed.
