Nostalgia and Productivity
I could not go through the last item of the day without a few comments concerning the productivity of the Mac Plus of 1986, compared with a present day Dual Core AMD64 system.
The conclusion was, that for most common tasks such as simple spreadsheets, writing letters or other business applications, there is little or no productivity gain between the two systems – even with several orders of magnitude improvement in processor speed, memory, disk capacity and user interface.
The OS bloatware – and the business model need for a “Decrapifier program” points to the good and bad of the past 21 years. The Mac Plus, monitor and printer would probably have set you back close to four or five thousand dollars – and inflation being what it is – that would be maybe seven or eight grand today ?
I still remember my amazement adding a Mac SE, a vertical monitor and Laser printer in the late 1980′s. Fire up MS Word, type a letter, print the page, and let the static grab the 8 1/2 x 11 paper sheet to the front of the monitor.
What was on that monitor was on the page.
Exactly.
Not sure we have made much progress at all.
