Laptop Catchup: An afternoon’s work
The original production computer for Slashdot Review was a Dell Inspiron 1100 Laptop. For various reasons, it’s been in semi-mothballs for the past six or eight months.
Getting it back on and operational ended up taking the entire afternoon. A total of 23 Windows upgrades, two separate Windows Genuine Advantage checks and multiple re-boots. All with the Celeron processor, 256MB of RAM and a 30GB hard drive.
I would be tempted to wipe this and start over, but the problems that I had going from SP1 to SP2 (which were severe) give me a lot of pause.
On the other hand, some careful purchasing and bumping the RAM from 256MB to 1GB, cleaning all but the most useful apps off of the drive to get some of the 26MB that is full right now – there might be some real functional life left in there.
All else failing, there might be a chance to try out those WiFi Linux drivers lurking in my future as well.
