Interesting to note the article today on the FAA – considering replacement of the XP Professional workstations with either some form of Linux or Google Apps. Very consistent with the earlier material this week as Vista gets closely evaluated by organizations and individuals as well.

No rush here – at all. The introductory “drug of choice” in the form of the Mac Mini Intel Core Duo made it’s way into the household last summer – and the excellent performance of Parallels has removed almost all fear on making the switch. My plan is to let the XP run its course on email / web browsing machines – and when they get totally bogged down – gradually replace them with Ubuntu. I have already started with one family machine at my daughter’s home – she seems pretty happy with the box – roughly equivalent to a Celeron 450 in power – and even on that ancient hardware, the Ubuntu is giving good account of itself.

The main limitation on these old tower machines seems to be the power supplies – as they give up the ghost, they get sent to the curb.
