| Hosting Migration This Weekend |
by Andrew McCaskey
Slashdot Review Podcast
A follow-on to the notes below, from yesterday : Some big decisions by a part time sysadmin (and not a very good one, apparently) to work with GoDaddy and upgrade to a full time assisted Hosting service. Listeners have been very patient and in the balance, we have been very lucky in the server department – but it’s time for me to get someone in here who knows what they are doing.
The conclusion is that it makes more sense to bring up another server in parallel with a fresh OS and application package set, than to try to take the existing server and install upgrade packages. The new server should be up Friday, and the migration and cut over done either Friday night or Saturday. This should keep disruption to a minimum- and allow the parts of the server that I can still touch to accept the WordPress upgrade over the weekend.
All of this should increase the reliability and level of service for listeners
Here is the post from yesterday..
There was some down time on the main server for SlashdotReview both today and yesterday – some maintenance that was being performed at GoDaddy – just happened to be online, having just added several more sites for other podcast clients – not something that I had done, just one of those coincidences that keep you from sleeping well.
The new WordPress 2.10 was going to be loaded this coming weekend, but now I find that it needs a MySQL update, and so I am not anxious to open that possible can of worms and break something else. Guess I will have to get some professional assistance. It’s a lot like chain saw operation. Fifteen or twenty years ago I would be up in the tree with the best of them. Now, the checkbook approach has a lot more appeal.
