Peek Inside the Vista Christmas Stocking: A Lump of Coal

During the Christmas Holiday, I will not be producing Slashdot Review / SDR News each day. I do plan a show for Dec 26 and 28 for a summary of some current items of interest.

However, here is some thing that I am sure you will want to read – a quick peek inside the Microsoft Vista Stocking. This article is from the technical viewpoint- not even considering the political viewpoint which, over the long haul, is probably more important.

Here’s an item pointed out by a listener that is sure to be in the next podcast:

Andy,
First, thanks for the podcast. It really helps me ‘keep up’ with thetech world. I never seem to have the time to read all of the articlesI’d like to. SDR helps keep me informed about thew world around me and I really enjoy it.

Second, the following is an interesting article on Vista’s Content Protection scheme linked at Digg. Some of the possible outcomes of this
protection scheme are truly frightening.

Thanks,
Garl

The Digg citation called it the “Longest Suicide Note Ever”

The article contains just a partial list of DRM related issues that will slowly grind its way into the online world as the current inventory of XP machines is replaced by Vista over the next five years. It is a gradual tightening of the screws, plugging one hole after another with the loss of freedom at every step. And, it is going to happen, regardless of the conversion to Mac or Linux among some aware consumers.

This is truly the Golden Age of the internet – and something that you will be able to tell your grandkids about
- the days before Podcasts, Video, and the internet went totally corporate.

I sent in another donation to EFF, and encourage you to do the same.
