    Dial In Line 408-731-6848

SDR News Extra Edition and the mysterious middle of the night messages have been solved. In the initial install, I had subscribed to a podcast that pushed the RSS update each morning around 1:45AM. It affected only my monitoring line, and not the list overall ! {whew !} so it is now safe for me to sleep without one ear open, with possible effect on listeners.

    TV and Autism

Cornell University – statistically significant relationship between autism rates and television watching by children under the age of 3.
The researchers studied autism incidence in California, Oregon, Pennsylvania, and Washington state.
They found that as cable television became common in California and Pennsylvania beginning around 1980, childhood autism rose more in the counties that had cable than in the counties that did not.
“We are not saying we have found the cause of autism, we’re saying we have found a critical piece of evidence,”

    Big Media -

    Saber-rattling lawyers
News Corp., General Electric Co.’s NBC Universal and Viacom Inc., have concluded that YouTube could be liable to copyright penalties of $150,000 per unauthorized video
Viacom MTV, Comedy Central and Nickelodeon 80,000 times a day via YouTube.

    Big Media Dilemma
Fear Google size and clout. Know that Google can be a valuable partner in distributing their content and also in drawing advertising.
YouTube has struck deals with TV companies NBC Universal, CBS Warner Music Group Corp., Vivendi SA’s Universal Music Group and Sony Corp.’s and Bertelsmann AG’s joint venture.
YouTube is building a system that would help automate identification of videos containing copyright material on its site, and allow the content owners to get a portion of any related ad revenue.
    All about the Benjamins

    Infected MP3 Players

    10,000 Players McDonalds Japan
    10 preloaded songs.
a variant of the QQPass password-stealing trojan.

    Virtual Worlds – Real Taxes

Second Life and World of Warcraft
millions of dollars worth of virtual goods and services every day…
People who cash into real-world currencies are required to report their incomes to the U.S. Internal Revenue Service

    Email servers will choke Spamhaus

Spamhaus has a user base of around 650 million, and its lists block some fifty billion spams per day
Register of Known Spam Operations (ROKSO)
David Linhard, of e360 Insight,Chicago , with a court order that could cause a temporary ten-fold surge in spam.
    He got listed as ROKSO
Although Spamhaus maintains the Illinois court has no jurisdiction over an organisation based in the UK, district court judge Charles Kocoras awarded a total of US$11.71 million in damages to Linhardt.
Kocoras also ordered Spamhaus to remove evidence of Linhardt’s spamming from ROKSO.

    Plot thickens
Furthermore, the order says Spamhaus must cease blocking Linhardt’s spam, as sent to users of the organisation’s lists.

Linhard asking the court to suspend the www.spamhaus.org domain until the antispam organisation complies with the order.
More than 90% of of all email is now spam, able to handle a ten-fold increase in traffic.
Others estimate Spamhaus’s blocking efficacy as closer to 75%; by this metric spam would increase four-fold, not ten-fold, if Spamhaus went unavailable.

    Decision that you regret.
Friendster- the social network no one talks about anymore.
JONATHAN ABRAMS was in a spot. He could take the safe bet and accept the $30 million that Google was offering him for Friendster,
If Google had paid him in stock, Mr. Abrams would easily be worth $1 billion today,
    Rockstar temptations, Venture capitalist friends

    BMI
    John Farrell

BMI really is a “poor mans” way of measuring body composition. ratio of height/weight. See the problem here? Someone that’s very lean body fat wise, but carries muscle, is going to be considered obese.
5″11, and I weight in at 190 pounds. BMI= obese
Body composition 14% fat every weekend, in one day, I ride between 75 – 100 miles, I lift weights almost daily, and in really good shape.

    BMI Part 2
Bioimpediancescale, which will give your the %fat. Better bench mark than your height/weight ratio.
Not even into the French Study IQ/BMI
    Two observations:
    Want a Golden Metric
lay person as totally reasonable, may be measuring something entirely differnent/ partially correlated/ totally bogus.
    Normal events, normally distributed
be very interesting to see how the data is distributed around both the BMI and vocabulary test.
Hate to ask these embarassing questions – messes up the story.
    Context missing
Scott Adams very thoughtful link on context – will put on site.

The True Cost of Standby Power – 4%

TV set is switched off, remote control
It’s the power used by the clock on the microwave oven,
LED glowing on your home stereo,
power brick on the cell phone charger—even when no phone is attached.
well-engineered and consume only mw most are not. Up to 30 watts
AC/DC adapters with transformers that consume power even in a no-load state
the cost of all that standby power can actually exceed the cost of having the device on.
Energy Star program allows TVs to use 3W in standby, while PCs can draw up to 30W and color copiers can burn through up to 175W in low power mode
he goal of the program is to have standby power usage fall below 1W in all products by 2010.

    MySpace Predator Caught By Code

    1000 line Perl Script
Wired News editor and former hacker Kevin Poulsen wrote a 1,000-line Perl script that checked MySpace for registered sex offenders.
he manually confirmed over 700 offenders, including a serial child molester in New York actively trying to hook up with underage boys on the site, and who has now been arrested as a result.

MySpace told Congress last June that it didn’t have this capability.

    Backyard Rocketeers

to resolve the seven-year-old dispute over the hobbyists’ use of a flammable propellant, ammonium perchlorate composite, or APCP
One member record-breaking launching was 72 miles up, at 3,420 miles per hour
Oct. 20, 60 members of Tripoli will launch high-powered rockets at the first X Prize Cup in Las Cruces, N.M., in an expo that bills itself as “the world’s first space show.” The X Prize Foundation of Santa Monica, Calif., richly rewards private space innovation. The rocketeers will try to launch an unmanned replica of the Mercury Redstone, which first transported Alan Shepard and Gus Grissom into space.
