    Twelve Year Old TV

Sincere condolences to fellow Tech Podcaster Jennifer Snoddy, of the Girl on Tech Podcast, who lost her infant daughter after a long battle for several weeks on Friday. By coincidence, Jennifer’s daughter was on the same hall at the Children’s Hospital where Todd Cochrane’s niece continues to slowly recover.

CNN had an interesting item over the weekend on the show “In the Money” .

This week’s show had several interesting items: The growing role of podcasting in the academic community. It seems that not only are professors all over the country using podcasts of their lectures to enrich and extend their lectures, but that Apple has introduced customized versions of iTunes for distribution at certain universities that bring the podcasts to their students.

I assume that it is still ok for me to use the P-word. As you may have heard, that is not the case in the recent “Cease and Desist letter” sent out to the folks at MyPodder from Apple, laying claim to all mention of the word podcast and derivations thereof. There was a good deal of roundtable discussion at the Techpodcast event on Saturday on that topic. Two main conclusions: The horse has left the barn about a year ago when such action might have nipped the use of the word in the bud. Secondly, at least in this area Comcast billboards assure “Podcasts Delivered” – not to be confused with POD the moving company that drops a shipping container with POD in three foot red letters. A lot of high profile users to go after, much less smaller fish. So what was MyPodder getting ready to introduce that was such a threat ? Maybe we will have some more info later this week at the Podcast and Portable Media Expo.

The other item most telling on CNN was Andy Serwer’s observation over the past six months or so that his twelve year old daughter had stopped watching TV. Not cut back, or watching videos. Had stopped watching TV. Via wireless laptop, the compelling content in the Serwer household is IM, YouTube, and MySpace. If she wanted to watch TV, she would watch the shows that she wanted on the laptop. Which would you rather give up :TV or Internet ?

It ‘s not even close. I knew that was the case for me, but if you are an advertiser, that twelve year old demographic is where the money is – for the next seventy years.
