The perennial favorite re-emerged in the news today – namely music, DRM, file sharing and similar topics – fired by the first pre-emptive Christmas season announcement of the Zune.

Now this is old hat to many listeners who have been part of SDR for the past twenty three months, but on the subject of music I must recommend again the excellent WGBH video The Way the Music Died. This one is not linked on the SDR YouTube Group, but it is available for viewing at the PBS site for WGBH that I have linked at SDR.

I’m getting ready for this season of music business news by keeping a healthy skepticism for the news category in general.

For example, consider the interesting note today as the BBC reported the study by Jupiter Research concerning the behavior of iPod owners. According to this report, most of iPod owners prefer to carry tunes that they have ripped from their own CD’s or downloaded from file sharing sites. Apparently, according to this study, less than 5% of the music on a given iPod will be purchased from online stores, and 83% do not buy music regularly. The conclusion: If you are Microsoft, don’t bet on a big start out of the gate for the Zune Music Store – by whatever name.

I’m wondering, for example, who, exactly did they select for their survey ?
And what were their music buying habits before the iPod ?

I would imagine that you could skew the results considerably by a sample that addressed one population group (college age iPod owners, for example). Likewise, an older population that may already have extensive CD collections of their own may not be all that interested in many if not most of the offerings in the iTunes Music Store. Add in some of us who really do prefer the ability to grab one or two tracks and spare themselves the shovelware approach that seem to load up so many CD releases.

If you are really curious, you can get all five pages of the report for only $750 .That’s a lot of downloads.
