The NASA space elevator story prompted a quick survey on videos on YouTube this weekend
    - with two interesting results: One, an animation that outlines the concept of the space elevator, and two additional videos on the general topic of nano technology.

One of these is an interesting conceptual version of using nanotech to create a “subdermal data display” – quite literally a palm pilot display – except the display is embedded on the back of the hand, rather than on the palm. A total of 27 videos now on the SDR YouTube group, and as the month gets underway, I hope that there will be some way to organize them by topic. Until that time, visitors will just have to wander in and wander about.

There was an article in the WSJ weekend edition voicing concern about the End of Serendipity. It was, of course, directly in response to the (second) bankruptcy of Tower Records, done in by file sharing (legal or illegal, depending upon who is telling the story). The conclusion was that iTunes put the nail in the coffin. Their comments were related to the browsing experience in brick and mortar record stores where you discovered artists, CD’s or tracks that you had no intention of buying when you walked in. It has its roots in second hand bookstores that you could be sure did not have the book you were looking for, but made sure that you left with at least a half dozen that you found along the way.

YouTube, in its present form is much like that. The tags are a good start, but when pulling on a thread, you start to unravel the edge and find something else interesting.

All in all – not a bad bargain. I think that I’ll leave the videos un-organized for a while yet. When you log in , if you will take a moment to sample a few of the topics that are off topic I think you will find it worth the trip.

That’s the reason that second hand bookstores still thrive – and I believe the reason that YouTube and other unscripted video has a place at the table for a long time.
