Slashdot Review Podcast
Interesting to note the article that discussed the use of the YouTube site by a 41 year old engineer to document shortcomings that he found in the design of Coast Guard patrol vessels, especially when you combine it with our little video experiment of the past ten days or so.
That’s an example of the second wave of YouTube – approaching middle age or older – arriving only a month or two after the first crest, let’s say the innovators and a mass of early adopters under the age of 25. The Wall Street Journal had an interesting article today on the problems that Viacom has with it’s MTV property. It seems that its core audience is leaving by droves to the trendier venues of YouTube, or MySpace. And, it’s not just those two. It’s Yahoo Video, Google Video, AOL Video, Heavy Networks, MSN Video. As John Dvorak noted a few weeks ago, there is tremendous pent up demand for the ability to easily post video content, especially at the right price, namely free.
In just the past week, we’ve had listeners create or recommend material that is interleaved along with the Stupid Pet tricks, mock music video, and dorm hijinks – some genuinely interesting content. Not necessarily well produced – but able to meet the needs of niche audiences that have an interest that is not being met elsewhere.
Combine the new University of Texas Auto Seeding Torrent server and the four part video that was added to the SDR YouTube group last night on the transfer of all sorts of materials via open bittorrent or darknets of various flavor. I am beginning to have the same feeling that crept up almost exactly two years ago – as what we know today as podcasting started to come on the scene- that all of this is combining into thousands of channels of communication . As each piece falls into place it incorporates the lessons learned just a few months before. There have already been some YouTube postings that force politicians out of their carefully on message scripts.
As the podcaster’s black T shirt slogan from Gnomedex in 2005 reads “I’m Recording This” .
