Not strictly true – I imagine that a daily ten minute video summary of the show prep would not cost YouTube much in the bandwidth department at all. On the other hand, there’s hope that we can get some more interesting material submitted or recommended by listeners either as a group member of by email link to Slashdotreview{at}gmail.com

Today’s SlashdotReview Video on YouTube recalls the article yesterday on the future of the cellphone. The latest SDR video feature is a demo from Phillips, of e-paper. This one is only a minute and ten seconds but you will be suitably impressed . The title is Polymer Vision, and it shows the display, photos, keyboards, maps, and all sorts of graphics while the material is handled, well, like paper.

It’s fast moving out of the novelty class, and it is almost a survival issue for the wireless carriers. Once you get past the inevitable saturation of the market and drive the average age of first cellphone below the age of six, as a service provider you have to move to the next big thing. With the benefit of GPS as far as location awareness and a legal requirement to have GPS capable phones in service within the next year or two, geolocation seems to be a natural. As discussed yesterday, the next big thing might well be the addition of a display that pulls out of the cellphone – like a windowshade – or is somehow un-wrapped by the user. Think of an application in terms of an online cellphone based request for a map of the area, or a route connecting point A to Point B.

Your significant other will be impressed – and you get the points, because, technically, you are not stopping to ask for directions.
