    Podcasting at Level II

Thanks to all listeners who’ve sent in trouble reports the past few days -
The upgrade last weekend seems to have disrupted at least one of the WordPress automatic enclosure features – delaying program delivery to some listeners. Bittorrent pulled through – due to some fast work at Download Radio.org – and the www prefix is still broken. Listener reports are still the most valuable troubleshooting information that there is – and those of you who’ve been listeners for a while know that improvements can cause some un-intentional breakage along the way.

The podcast world – and our distribution partner Melodeo.com – took a big step today – the AllTel Wireless Axcess Mobilcast service. The service enables Alltel Wireless customers to easily search and listen to thousands of podcasts on their wireless phones for a monthly subscription of $3.99. Alltel Wireless is the first company in the United States to bring this service to market as a standard service, along with other products like ring tones and games.

Since last December, you may have heard me mention the Melodeo Mobilcast client for the Motorola Razr phone. That client version is now up to 4.0 – still a free download, and the phones have expanded to include one model from Kyocera as well. It’s worked well with the Cingular data package plan. But, it was strictly an early adopter effort to download the client and certainly not endorsed or promoted by Cingular. The data plan adds a salty $20 per month, and depending upon location, the level of service could vary a good deal.

AllTel Axcess Mobilcast moves to the next level, gets to a more realistic price point, and is an encouraging move into mainstream for both delivery and search / discovery.

This is the first endorsement of podcasting on the mobile phone platform by a major service provider in the US - but not the first for Melodeo. They have led in this distribution method for podcasts in markets including Canada, Spain and China.

Combine the online presence at Melodeo.com that combines a podcatcher client at your desk, and allows you to surf elsewhere while listening. You have the ability to send your favorite podcast listing directly to friends, and most impressively, the ability to pause your playlist at your desk, hop in the car dial in by phone and resume playing your playlist right where you left off.

When your aggravating two year lock in contract expires – I think that you’ll find it well worthwhile to explore some podcatcher capability on your next phone.
