    Streamer, Bittorrent and Remote Checkups

    Slashdot Review Podcast

Over twenty five shows at last count are available on the Techpodcast Streaming server. THe TPN streamer is a Windows Media stream that we are beginning to beef up with additional content from various TPN shows. While most of our listeners are mobile in some form or other, a surprising number of people listen, at least part of the time, from their desks. In addition, some corporate or government offices block mp3 downloads or bittorrent, but permit Windows Media player streams.

All in all, it is a good way to discover new TPN shows that you might enjoy, and discover what’s happening outside of your normal listening views. I see that the Perlcast has been added, Miketechshow (who is in the running for the Podcast People’s Choice Award) , One Minute Tip, Antipodean Podcast, from Australia, and the Knightcast from Belgium are just a few of the shows in the playlist. One of the upcoming projects is making the Streamer easier to see – right now, you have to look down below Categories, Archives and Information links. You can look for that to become way more easy to find. Soon.

The other big distribution news is that the bittorrent feed, provided by DownloadRadio.org, is growing at a very substantial rate – just over the past two months.
Particular thanks to those of you who have recently given the bittorrent feed a try, and to listners who report on the health of that feed each morning and to Peter Yorke at DownloadRadio.org that It’s been quite a while since I have mentioned the Blue Icon at Slashdot Review.com – that is how you subscribe to the bittorrent feed if your podcatcher allows.

SDR has always been available on bittorrent since the first day we started – for both practical and political reasons: Practical – because the bittorrent feed has proven it’s ability to scale by several orders of magnitude literally overnight, when other distribution has gone offline, and for the reason that day after day, we have an example of a substantial non-infringing use of bittorrent technology that counters the MPAA and RIAA assertion that all bittorrent users are automatically criminals. As I recently mentioned, if Net Neutrality goes the wrong way – which it easily could – bittorrent will be the podcasters path out of the walled garden set up by carriers and their major media customers.

I have to offer one personal plug for our sponsor GoToMeeting: A session of routine maintenance and spyware chasing on my Dad’s machine – 650 miles away – was almost a pleasure. Sometimes it’s a good thing when a 90 year old lets you drive.
