    Brands That Will Not Die

Network World had an interesting section on “Brand Names that will not Die

If you have spent – lets say the past 35 years or so around technology – there are certain brands that were a part of your life, for good or for ill.

It’s a fun list: Here’s a paraphrase and summary of the article

Number ten is Prodigy – not that old geeky, expensive preserve called Compuserv, but the first the first “consumer ISP” of 1984. Still around, as an ISP – just barely having been traded several times, bought and buried by SBC – now AT&T and still the number one ISP .. in Mexico.

WordPerfect: There was WordStar but the cool kids migrated to WordPerfect in short order in the late 1980′s. Borland, Novell, Corel by 1996 bundled on millions of machines today. You may recall the De-Crapifier discussion earlier in the week.

Lotus Notes: It’s been over 15 years, and as Ray Ozzie has said “IBM has a history of never forcing its customers through tremendous changes; there are S/360s out there that are still cranking along, and I’m sure you’d find a few PROFS systems that are still out there.

    Thinkpad, Compaq
( better go there quick before the last wisps have blown away)

Clariion, Netscape, Linksys - going or gone, except when , in case of Netscape pulled back off life support in a way embarassing to most but at least with some flair from new CEO Jason Calcanis.

Norton - as in Norton AntiVirus, Internet Security, Personal Firewall, SystemWorks, etc is number two: This man sold Peter Norton Computing to Symantec in 1990 and hasn’t written any code this century, yet his name still adorns the shrink-wrapped boxes that contain among the most popular lines of security products.

But the number one “Brand that Will not Die” is AT&T. Took on the US Government three times 1913, 1956 and 1982 suffered a near death experience before being rescued by one of her children.

    That’s family value(s) in action.
