Slashdot Review Podcast
One of the tasks at the beginning of each month for TechPodcast Network Affiliates is compiling the Apache logs and download reports. It’s just been easier to process this on a Linux box, and for the past year or so I have been running Ubuntu Linux.
I want to highly recommend the new Dapper Drake version 6.0 of Ubuntu Linux workstation. ( If you are not a Ubuntu fan, the versions get snappy code names with each major upgrade). Version 5 was called Breezy Badger.Once again Ubuntu has amazed me with the ease of installation, and I think you will be really pleased with the results of your efforts. The CD image available for free download runs from disk, albeit slowly – so you can get some idea of what’s in store before you make a decision.
In light of the discussion yesterday, the really inexpensive tower machines from Dell, eMachines and others present you with an interesting option: What if you ordered up a new consumer machine, and on power up never ran Home XP at all ? Just popped in the Ubuntu Dapper, booted directly into Linux, and clicked on install ?
You could put those backup/restore distribution disks in the proverbial “safe place”, cruise for a few weeks with a fast processor, lots of memory, new machine and put the Dapper Drake through its paces.
Yesterday’s De-Crapifier discussion the PC De-Crapifier would be a moot point. You could pull down applications as needed. You could cruise with little or no danger of Zero Day attacks and dodge spyware, virus infection and popups. And if you finally lost your nerve – or had to give it back to the kids – you could break the seal on those backup/restore disks and it would be like it never happened.
A friend today told me he had stopped building PC’s for his kids off to college. He claims he can’t build them as cheap as Dell. – and he’s from Texas, also. And to paraphrase, what happens in Texas Stays in Texas
I’ll bet that you did not realize that The Techpodcast Network had a subscription page for Technical Magazines and Whitepapers on the site. It’s under Information Links : There are more than three dozen topics ranging from Agriculture Technology through IT, Meetings, Travel, Multimedia Telecom and Wireless and Energy and Utilities.
If you are an independent consultant, student or technology business manager, these professional publications are free of charge with qualification. Doing business in today’s competitive environment requires a serious commitment to stay abreast of trends and technology, and every business needs a technology infrastructure to perform effectively and efficiently.
Just another service for listeners of the TPN. If it’s tech, its here…
