Day three of the business trip this week, so once again producing in the hotel room – another late night production.
One item that might be of interest is the experience with the PublicVPN service. After a shaky start a month or two ago, I’m getting better at using PublicVPN effectively. It has worked very well this trip.
As they explain on their site “.. a VPN protects your data by closing the ‘air-gap.’ The ‘air-gap’ is simply the distance between your laptop and the internet access point. All the data that flows across that gap is unencrypted – meaning anyone within range of your internet access point can read all your emails, see the websites you visit, and steal all the website passwords you enter.
Based on a series of articles a few months ago, I became aware of how exposed you are to traffic interception in open WiFi access points. In addition to passwords and account numbers that may be lurking in your email or or web based applications – there is simply, from a blogger perspective, the chance of interception of WordPress account information or the mischief that could be set off with compromise of your ftp information or server passwords.
As a business traveler, the clusters of laptop users gathered in wifi range are a given tip-off. I suspect that a greater risk is the wifi provided by your friendly truck stop operator or motel – where the malicious or the curious have time and comfort to set things up for some casual or intentional monitoring.
The Public VPN service is an inexpensive $6 per month service – enough to activate for a one time trip – or discounted for an entire year’s service.
The other service that can sometimes help the performance tremendously as you move from place to place is the free service from OpenDNS.com . Instead of taking whatever DNS the hotspot decides to dish out, you can set your connection to their DNS servers and greatly improve the time to resolve addresses quickly.
Two handy tools that you may want to include in your next business trip .
