Improved TPN Streamer and QuNu
by Andrew McCaskey
Slashdot Review Podcast
It has been a busy, busy weekend for the Techpodcast Network - in spite of the summer time vacation schedule for our live Roundtable this past Saturday. A last minute change of topic put most of the emphasis on RSS feeds, and then a deep dive into the programming details on how the RSS feed will be used to enhance one of the services for listeners in the next week or so.
A major expansion of the TechPodcast Network audio streaming service is in the works – expanding the present rotation of roughly a dozen shows to a much larger sampling of TPN content. As we discussed last week, the addition of new programs of both general consumer interest, as well as deeper discussions of various applications, languages and communities of practice add a lot to the network.
One of the interesting aspects of our audience reports is the number of listeners who catch shows at their desk, in addition to or sometimes instead of listening on a portable device. The TPN streaming server is designed to enable you to sample a variety of tech podcasts – and in some government and commercial situations that block downloads, streaming files are permitted.
The other interesting outcome of the roundtable was a chance for several of us to share some recent discoveries of useful sites or applications. One of our listeners – not a TPN program producer – took the GoToMeeting floor, and introduced us to QuNu.com. Qunu is a site and community of on-line experts in LAMP as in Linux, Apache, MySQL and Perl/Python/PHP – the building blocks of Open Source applications that surround us all.
You type in a topic tag – such as “Opening Files in Python” – and the system responds with six or eight live volunteers, online in a Jabber IM session. A second click shows how they assess their skills and knowledge and a little about their experience level. It looks like an exciting community – and unlike some “ask me a question and for $10 I’ll make you a member” services, this one appears to be genuine.
