Inbox Zero has paid off once again – successfully dealing with several hundred messages that were waiting after a week’s vacation – and that was after the company spam filters had tagged several hundred more special messages of a medical nature or surrounding the misfortunes of a recently deposed Nigerian prince.

It might be worthwhile to review a few tips from the 43Folders Inbox Zero project: First, there is no substitute for the ruthless ten second triage of these three escalating questions:

    1. What does this message mean to me and why do I care ?

    2. What action, if any, does this message require of me ?

If the email in question passes the first two then there’s only one thing left -

    3. What’s the most elegant way to close out this message and the nested action it contains ?

Your trigger finger should be paused over the delete key throughout the process.

Once you gain confidence in the free version of Copernic Desktop or the free Microsoft Download “Lookout” for Outlook you will be able to loosen up on the folder system. Your final friend in the process to keep the inbox clean is the Outlook “Unread Messages” view, which will allow you to keep swatting down the new ones that show up while you are attacking the pile.

What would happen if you took on the task of clicking to 3,200 podcaster web sites and took a close look at their RSS feed, contact info, and general website design ?
