Social Network Setup – Not Easy
by Andrew McCaskey
Slashdot Review Podcast
Back home in the Midwest, and facing the task of getting back in Sync with the world of work. I expect that I will be exercising some of those InBox Zero skills that we spoke of a few weeks ago – slicing through some of the work related emails that have piled up the past week while “out of pocket”. Not to mention the sack on postal mail that is expected tomorrow morning – which will be presorted by the trash bin as usual.
I’m looking forward to getting back on the Melodeo site. In addition to providing mobile distribution for the podcast to selected mobile phones, Melodeo is also providing an online social podcasting site that enables you to discover, listen to and forward podcasts directly to your friends. Your playlist re-appears when you log on, and if you have one of the phones capable of downloading the Melodeo client, you can pause at your desk, and then resume your podcast playlist when you log in from your mobile.
There are a number of social networking sites, as you know. What you may not have thought of is how you might choose to use those sites.
There were some interesting comments this past week that you may have seen, surrounding the demise of the watercooler conversation. It pointed out that the number one television show in the US 1986 was Bill Cosby, attracting on the order of sixty million viewers. Your co-workers probably tuned into perhaps five television choices, you listened to the same Top40 Radio station on the way to work, catching the World news on the top of the hour. Today’s #1 rated show attracts about a third of that number out of a much larger population. It’s resulted in a fragmentation of interests and viewpoints on the one hand, and, at the same time a narrowing of viewpoints.
CNNMoney continued with the idea that the absence of a common conversation baseline at work for casual interaction results in “an explosion of choice that leaves us poorer” . The item today on Podcasting Politicians reinforces the thought from Marc Gunther that politics is one area where a lack of a common baseline is moving towards dangerous ground. Today’s media choices give the ability to select only supporting niche material – filtering out material that makes you uncomfortable or with which you disagree. Not the best groundwork for understanding political issues.
I am not sure what your workday is like, but most days, my watercooler is Skype – and is just as likely to include co-workers in the UK, Belgium, Germany, Colorado, California, Japan, Australia, Singapore and India. When you build out your social network, through sites like Melodeo, you might consider building it out a little further than your comfort zone. And when you share a podcast with a member of your watercooler group – be sure to ask them to surprise you.
