    Google Earth Perspective

You would think that the triple threat – AdAware, Microsoft Windows Defender, and Spybot Search and Destroy would be enough to keep a 90 year old’s PC clean and free running for 24 hours.

You might be wrong – at least with a normal amount of curiosity and web browsing that includes an active search of a dozen newspapers, a check at one or two of the lottery sites, and a click or two on a free screensaver offer that is just too good to pass up. Not plugged up entirely, but back on the fast track to spyware and adware slowdowns . That should give you a good idea of how a lot of my time has been spent on this family vacation – and I imagine many listeners have been down the same road.

I’m very grateful for Zone Alarm, and with a GoToMeeting session every month or so, you can keep things on an even keel. With a good cable modem connection and all the cobwebs cleared out, it’s not such a bad machine- A P4 with 512MB of memory.

We did have some serious fun – and it started with the download of Google Earth.

My Dad served in the 8th Air Force in Norwich, England during WWII.
A quick zoom and half hour explore of the immediate neighborhood, a peek at my office in the Chicago suburbs, a look at the local Blue Ridge Mountains, and we were off to England. Adding in the roads and layers as a part of the demo, you could some memories fall into place. Especially since the view from Google Earth tilted towards the horizon would be a familiar one to a young airman from over sixty years ago.

Today, he reported another good visit – gaining experience with the Google Earth interface and the tilt / elevation he was able to find some familiar landmarks, and buildings in Norwich and the surrounding countryside. He’s going to be headed back again for a look at some distant and familiar memories.

If you have any members of what Tom Brokaw has christened ‘The Greatest Generation” in your life – take the time to set up Google Earth for them
. It could be a great experience – and put those AdAware Sessions into proper perspective.
