A bit of philosophy this evening.
I really enjoyed reading the item on Stupid Business Ideas – especially the part that indicates that they were successful Stupid Business Ideas.
Following that thread for a moment, I came on an interesting site called The Secret to Making Lots of Money.
In his blog, Fred Gratzon points out that one person’s success is often attributed to luck – but reminds us that there are two kinds of luck – one that wins lotteries and is too unstable to depend upon as a career choice, and the other that he calls “support of nature”.
Here’s how that works:
We don’t have control of outcomes – or the fruits of our actions. Fruits of action are Nature’s domain, not ours. We have no control of the yield: materiel, opportunities, recognition, prosperity or other markers of success. We do have control over our actions.
We all know from years of television advertising “It’s not nice to fool Mother Nature”. I expect that some of you, like me, have spent lots of time on business plans that focus on the fruits desired – which we cannot control, and which is not our domain, anyway.
A focus on actions, which we can control, puts things back in proper perspective. A focus on actions that surrounds a topic that we enthusiastically embrace, promotes clarity, creativity and understanding and pulls in knowledge, talent and energy. Action yields deeper insight, and insight leads to appreciation of subtle aspects of the problem and ideas to harness those insights. We can do less and accomplish more. Finer actions allow us to do less and accomplish more. And that is a winning combination in any system.
It’s a description of Nature’s win-win. Even For a plan for a Stupid Business.
