WiFi Road Lessons and Birds

Slashdot Review Podcast
Apologies for the partial post last night – which failed to trigger the enclosure. Here is a repost with the headline block and the embedded file name that should add the enclosure properly. Thanks to Peter Yorke and others for the heads up !
Today’s show is not mobile – I guess you could say it is portable – from the picnic table, with Purple Martins overhead and a great view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Much cooler outside than in the house – so at least my portion of the podcast will have some local color – at least soundwise. Listeners outside the States may recognize that we are having quite a heat wave in most parts of the US – temps pushing 100 degrees F, I guess in the mid-30′s Celsius. The purple martins are teaching their young to fly, and in this climate, they will be gone in another week or ten days.
One thing I have decided on the trip, though – I need to set up a hard-limit credit card with say, a $100 max that you could use to grab paid WiFi in a strange town. Highly variable results on the trip with applying PublicVPN to WiFi connections at motels, truckstops (TA and Flying J) and Panera Bread locations.
If you are unlucky enough to be in a place without Free Wifi – like Breezewood, PA – you have to pony up the credit card info in the clear, in order to get a connection. By in the clear, I mean on the Radio link to the access point that is providing the https browser connection – exactly the exposure where the VPN provides protection, once you get past the chicken and egg situation. PublicVPN.com has a good illustration of the dilemma.
On some connections, the VPN was up solid within fifteen or twenty seconds. On others, it never connect – and still others would connect the first time, route to the first destination, and then lock up when you tried to change to another site. I’ll be seeking a hotspot later tonight to get the show posted.
On other matters, I am as puzzled as several listeners on the Australian band Willow – as in Willowgroove, the band featured on July 9th. I’ve had several comments on the dead link – not at all my intent. A listener in Australia first put me on to this band, and I had featured the group several times this year. They had a really good site – and lots of good material . I see that they have disappeared from Garageband.com as well. I have sent an email back to the original listener but have not heard from him.
They had an excellent site and several CD’s – hope that they will be back. If any SDR listeners in Australia have more info, please let us know: Slashdotreview {at}gmail.com
