Bittorrent – When a Mixmaster Error Strikes

    by Andrew McCaskey
    Slashdot Review Podcast

Some interesting speculation on what came through on your podcatcher in the past 24 hours. As you may have heard, Libsyn, which distributes the mp3 portion of SlashdotReview, had a bit of a mixup last night in their consistently clever system of server/connection/demand juggling scripts. Seems like some pointers got scrambled, and while you may have gotten SDR delivered in the SDR channel, you might as well have had Adventures of the Marginally Sane podcast or the Nightly Bedtime Story Podcast arrive – and those are some of the better choices from a family friendly perspective. My apologies if something startling showed up.

The confusion lasted only a few hours – so depending on when your podcatcher woke up and polled the system, you may or may not have been affected. It’s a part of the continued growing pains of podcasting- and as far as I am concerned, Libsyn is doing a fantastic job. But, I want to encourage you to at least experiment with the Bittorrent feed of Slashdot Review – using a podcatcher like Nimiq or Azureus.

It’s incidents such as these that have caused us to continue to work hard on the bittorrent feed with DownloadRadio.org. Peter Yorke, Dwight Illk, and a number of listeners keep plugging along each day with provisioning, QC checks, and performance observations on the SDR alternate feed. As I mention from time to time, I think that bittorrent is and will be an important part of podcasting, particularly as big media take over the distribution channels. Independent voices in the podcasting space must have viable bittorrent clients and seeding networks. If net neutrality goes the way of the lobbyist and the big pipes are totally owned and controlled by corporate interests, bittorrent may well be the ONLY way that content can be independently distributed two years from now. Several Techpodcast Network shows are also adding bittorrent channels as well.

If you are missing SDR episodes, you can get them from DownloadRadio.org. And, if the feed appears to go down from iTunes or your regular podcatcher, take a quick try with your Bittorrent channel receiver. It’s a pretty good bet we’ll be there.
