Virtualization
by Andrew McCaskey
Slashdot Review Podcast
It looks like Virtualization is becoming the flavor of the month. You have heard me mention the excellent Mac Intel Duo Core VIRtualization with the Parallels Desktop. I have WinXP machine on the new Mac Mini, and also a Ubuntu machine. Parallels has been receiving some well deserved press as well.
Just today, as we heard, the announcement of VMWare Server for free download.
Microsoft has joined the party.
It appears that Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 Service Pack 1 is now absolutely free. Virtual PC 2007 will be available for free in 2007, with support for Microsoft Windows Vista, and Windows Vista Enterprise customers will have the right to install four copies of the operating system on a desktop for a single user. It is not clear on first reading if the Virtual PC 2004 requires WindowsXP Professional or if regular vanilla WinXP Home users can get in on the fun. The white paper explains a Virtual PC as ” a safety-net for running incompatible legacy applications… and .. With Virtual PC deployed, you can delay the need to replace legacy applications with newer versions or develop compatibility fixes for them, without interrupting your Windows XP Professional deployment project” .
The FAQ’s confirm this as the Connectix product that some of you may be familiar with.
It looks like specialized Virtualization is becoming more popular as well.

Ten minutes of surfing around lottery sites, free screensaver deals and “Free Movies” will convince you that all is not as it might first appear. It seems that the sites that with the most re-assuring “Absolutely No Spyware” banners seem to be the same sites that bump up the GreenBorder incident counters the most. All the processing power that goes to waste on most of the applications that we run each day, so it might be a good time to give some flavor of virtualization a try. – If you looking for a good four minute high level tutorial, there’s a Whiteboard Video on ZDNet featuring Dan Chu of VMware.- that I’ve linked that on SDR
