    Trip to Fry’s + ScanR

    by Andrew McCaskey
    Slashdot Review Podcast

Those of you who live in major metro areas probably find my trips a bit amusing. I can’t believe that I wandered through the temptations of Fry’s Electronics for over an hour, “un-chaperoned”, as my wife might say, and ended up walking out the door with an O’reilly Book on Applescript and a pack of gum. That has got to set some sort of record. I guess that I was just responding to the sort of mental overload that I had at the Apple Store the day before. Didn’t even come away with a pack of gum from that visit.

Back at home base after a few days mobile. And some email catching up to do. One of the most interesting messages was from the young author of the language Leopard – Brandon Watts. Brandon has quite a resume for some one young or old – and he wrote to mention something that we spoke of quite some time ago:A site called ScanR.com.

Brandon explains “The service essentially allows you to scan, copy, and fax with your camera orcamera phone. The idea is that you take a picture of a document, whiteboard, or business card , e-mail the picture to them, and then scanR does OCR (optical character recognition) on the file and sends you a PDF version of the document.

Parts of this are currently in beta. The content of the PDF file that is delivered to you is tagged and easily searchable.

I know that you do have to have a pretty good camera in your phone. Six months or a year ago I went to the site and tried the service, but found that my camerphone did not have the resolution needed to make it work. But, six months or a year in the mobile phone business is time enough to turn over at least one round of technology. In fact, with the SIM card in the Cingular RAZR phone, I am starting to get a little impatient and taking some time to look around – even though I have about ten months more to go on the current contract. I think I have enough roll over minutes to take me to the end of the contract – so maybe that will be what I use to rationalize an upgrade to the handset itself. The mental games that geeks can play when there’s a new necessity on the horizon !
