More VPN Tweak Tools – and Gnomedex Prep
by Andrew McCaskey
Slashdot Review Podcast

Getting ready for the Gnomedex opener this evening here in Seattle, and anticipating the opening session tomorrow when about three or four hundred laptops try to hit access points in the Bell Conference Center here in Seattle. Each year, it gets to be more and more hectic. I think last year it was a T1 and four access points, this year I know two T1′s and at least six WiFi node will be involved. That’s been one of the motivators in the past few weeks for my VPN project on the laptop.

If you are experimenting with the VPN on a Windows box, part of getting the PublicVPN.com account to work involved some serious tweaking on the laptop’s registry.
I had a quick note today from Pattrick Boyle concerning ” a couple of programs to help with those pesky MTU registry settings. ”

SpeedGuide’s TCP Optimizer

To easily make changes in the Windows registry, you can usually find specialized utilities like these. Also, you will find .REG files offered by Windows “tweak” sites. When you double click on a file that ends with .REG, you will be prompted to import it into your registry with whatever settings it contains.

Patrick notes that his favorite speed testing site is : Speedguide.net , while I have been partial to the one from Speakeasy.net

On the un-official preparation side, I was able to link up with Todd Cochrane from Geek News Central for a trip to the Apple Store and then Guitar Center, as Todd continues to build out his podcasting studio. I was glad to see Todd and the Salesman at the Seattle Guitar Center was Really Glad to see him. I’ll try to get a photo up on the site.

Later today, a quick dinner planned with Rob Greenlee, of Webtalk Radio and Peter Yorke of DownloadRadio.org – our bittorrent guru. Rumors also of new announcements from Melodeo and Blubrry.com – and as I get the official word I will try to pass along those items to you.

Inbox Zero: One of the guideposts along the way will be some articles from the excellent site for personal productivity at 43 Folders , specifically an article entitled “My email diet” in the Inbox Zero – Day 1series.
From the 43Folders Inbox Zero process, I’m learning that these tools are no substitute for ruthless triage of escalating questions:
1. What does this message mean to me and why do I care ?
2. What action, if any, does this message require of me ?
3. What’s the most elegant way to close out this message and the nested action it contains ?

These questions were most valuable getting from 400 to 100 items. After that, the default
