VPN Report – Part 2
by Andrew McCaskey

More that I do not understand about VPN’s.

From this perspective in Lansing, Michigan, it’s working really well. Just checked into the motel and fired up the laptop – and within about 30 seconds, the VPN is connected and working like a champ. If I can say that in about two hours after the show is produced and posted, that will be even better.

In this case, the VPN tunnel does not seem to be affecting performance all that much – it looks like about 400 down and 200 up, regardless of having the VPN tunnel engaged or hitting the access point directly. After a quick check at the PublicVPN.com site and the green light to indicate proper operation, it was off to the email, with great success.

The really encouraging test was pulling up the Slingbox
client and checking on the home Tivo. to my great surprise, it was able to pull a connection to the Slingbox through the VPN as well. Not that there are multiple bad guys who are particularly interested in BBC America or the local news and weather from South Bend, IN – but I have to admit I get a kick out of keeping them wondering just what IS inside that tunnel.

If you have been following the project this week, hope that you’ll look at the article on Informit.com concerning the vulnerabilities of WEP in any sort of public WiFi situation, and consider learning more about VPN’s . In spite of the hassle, I think that you will find it to be worth the hassle.

Now for the bad news. I have no idea why this did not work about five hours ago
when I was able to connect with the old Dell laptop, but unable to get the MTU setting or something right on this laptop. Add to that the fact that the Dell version of Zone Alarm does not have the PublicVPN gateway as a trusted site, but works .. and up until now, this laptop did have it on the trusted list – and would not work. It’s great that it is working, but I’d sure like to understand why.

Another project for another week !

Inbox Zero: One of the guideposts along the way will be some articles from the excellent site for personal productivity at 43 Folders , specifically an article entitled “My email diet” in the Inbox Zero – Day 1series.

From the 43Folders Inbox Zero process, I’m learning that these tools are no substitute for ruthless triage of escalating questions:

1. What does this message mean to me and why do I care ?

2. What action, if any, does this message require of me ?

3. What’s the most elegant way to close out this message and the nested action it contains ?

These questions were most valuable getting from 400 to 100 items. After that, the default
Outlook folder “Unread Items” kept the new stuff in one place – just reading headers and sender lines for easy zapping
