VPN Report

by Andrew McCaskey

Here’s the progress on the VPN. In a nutshell, I am beginning to see why there are those who just take the chance and run wide open.

Following the instructions at publicvpn.com, I got the XP laptop configured properly – but then it seemed that when I was able to log on to the new account – just could not push any data through it. A quick exchange of emails with their tech support made me wish for a Mac laptop. The required change in the MTU setting – the Maximum Transmission Unit – in Mac world was one line. The XP world, however, required a calm and focused session with regedit – and some careful read through of two pages from the official Microsoft Knowledge Base on how to make things happen.

In the end, the instructions were thorough and step by step – but you definately want some quiet time to move slowly. In the end, a re-boot, and the PublicVPN connection came right up without difficulty. It looks like the speed penalty for the VPN is about half – up and down – but that is about par with what I see on the official company VPN – and not really a major problem, at least for the purpose of checking emails. I guess the main teaching point is – make sure that you have some time to get this thing tested before you have to take it on the road. I’ll be mobile tomorrow, and will have a chance to try things out on a nearby trip before the big trip to Gnomedex next week.

The only regret that I will have traveling to Gnomedex in Seattle next week is that I can’t be two places at one time. The other tremendous opportunity this coming week is a lot closer – in Chigaco, called YAPC – Yet Another Perl Conference.

There are still some tickets left for the YAPC – Perl Conference in Chicago this coming week. You can get those tickets by following links at SDR – The conference is chaired by TPN member Josh McAdams. The three day conference is only $100 – a tremendous way to learn more about Perl and the Perl community. Josh was, of course, one of our main presenters on the TPN Roundtable last week – and you can get a preview of the conference and it’s content in an hour long recording of the GoToMeeting session (audio and video) that is posted at Techpodcasts.com

Inbox Zero: One of the guideposts along the way will be some articles from the excellent site for personal productivity at 43 Folders , specifically an article entitled “My email diet” in the Inbox Zero – Day 1series.
From the 43Folders Inbox Zero process, I’m learning that these tools are no substitute for ruthless triage of escalating questions:
1. What does this message mean to me and why do I care ?
2. What action, if any, does this message require of me ?
3. What’s the most elegant way to close out this message and the nested action it contains ?

These questions were most valuable getting from 400 to 100 items. After that, the default

Outlook folder “Unread Items” kept the new stuff in one place – just reading headers and sender lines for easy zapping
The free 40 page downloadable e-Book from Rajesh Setty, a fellow Gnomedexer.. “Personal Branding for Technology Professionals”, It’s some heavy reality for anyone in the technology arena – especially the IT field or pure technologists.
