Perl Conference and Roundtable Info
by Andrew McCaskey
If you are listening before 1:30PM Pacific on Saturday June 17th, you will be able to join us realtime for the latest TechPodcast Network Roundtable. You can get sign up information at Techpodcasts.com – and join us on Skype and GoToMeeting.
Josh McAdams at Perlcast.com will take center stage – since he is the ringleader of the Chicago Edition of YAPC – Yet Another PERL Conference – June 26-28. The conference is a grass-roots non-profit conference focused on the Perl programming language. It is three days (June 26th-28th), has over sixty presentations, and is dirt cheap ($100). There will be a lot of big names there… Larry Wall, the inventor of Perl…. Damian Conway, the evil half of Larry, Audrey Tang, the creator of Pugs, and many more. This year’s dinner will cost you extra on Tuesday night, June 27th, at Dave and Buster’s in Chicago, but they are providing transportation from the Conference Center.
After the conference they are holding open classes for people who want to learn to program Perl or who want to learn more about Perl. The courses are taught by professional instructors and are $200 each…1/10th of the normal cost.
As I mentioned before, I had made arrangements, flights and hotel for the Gnomedex conference in Seattle the same week – and if I did not have that prior commitment, I would have made the PERL Conference a definate part of my plans. They have made a real effort to make housing and meals affordable as well – just exactly what you need to take you back to your college days – at the Illinois Institute of Technology.
The other portion of the Roundtable tomorrow will be Mac focused – specifically how a user group in Belgium was able to create a cluster of Mac servers to support a major European Music conference with over a thousand attendees.
It is going to be a very interesting show – and I hope that you will be able to join us, as always, using GoToMeeting.

Inbox Zero: One of the guideposts along the way will be some articles from the excellent site for personal productivity at 43 Folders , specifically an article entitled “My email diet” in the Inbox Zero – Day 1series.
From the 43Folders Inbox Zero process, I’m learning that these tools are no substitute for ruthless triage of escalating questions:
1. What does this message mean to me and why do I care ?
2. What action, if any, does this message require of me ?
3. What’s the most elegant way to close out this message and the nested action it contains ?
These questions were most valuable getting from 400 to 100 items. After that, the default
