Nixie Tubes and a New Roundtable Announcement
by Andrew McCaskey
In mind for a little exercise in retro this weekend ?” Ever felt that LEDs are a little ‘cold’ or ‘plasticky’? Do you yearn for that warm, comforting glow that only ionized gas behind glass can provide? – It’s a collection of homebrew clocks that all employ Nixie Tubes so that you can savor that magical moment that hovered between analog and digital for the period from 1950 to 1960 – and beyond that if you were a kid with a limited budget but good junkbox building up a frequency counter.
Younger listeners will recognize recognize nixies as essential props in every atomic bomb countdown machine in television and film history in the last forty years.
It’s from the site at electricstuff.co.uk and in addition to Schematic, parts list and pre-etched boards at the site there are links off to Cosmodog wps and Cathode Corner for ready-made ones or kits.
The gallery moves from geekdom to art, with examples of sculptors and designers from the UK, Holland, USA, Slovenia, Germany, Australia, Greece, Japan, Finland, NewZealand, Switzerland who’ve packaged their nixie clocks into the whole retro package.
If you are in the mind for some forward looking tech, reserve some time next weekend for a super edition of TechPodcast Roundtable, at 1:30PM. Josh McAdams at the Perlcast.com will take center stage – since he is the ringleader of the Chicago Edition of YAPC – Yet Another PERL Conference – June 26-28. This is YAPC #8. Josh, and some of the presenters and PERL luminaries that will be at that conference will be our primary guest presenters. But wait, there’s more: and from an unexpected source – Knightwise from the Knightcast Podcast covered a recent Electronic Music show in Belgium where 30 Mac servers were pulled into a network for a three day conference – that had over a thousand participants, indexing some 2000 photos in realtime. That’s going to be segment #2, and then more PERL.
It’s going to be a great program and something to look forward to from the Tech Podcast Network.

From the 43Folders Inbox Zero process, I’m learning that these tools are no substitute for ruthless triage of escalating questions:
1. What does this message mean to me and why do I care ?
2. What action, if any, does this message require of me ?
3. What’s the most elegant way to close out this message and the nested action it contains ?
