Vonage: Act II of Voice 2.0
by Andrew McCaskey
The big noise has surrounded the IPO from Vonage. You may have heard that the IPO for Vonage has not gone all that well. On May 23rd, the public offering went live, opening at $17a share, totalling about $2.7B. Spread that over1.6 million subscribers and that approaches about $1600 per subscriber. Since the average take per subscriber is $25 per month, about May 24th people began to ask how many months would be required to make this a going concern.
Nearest competitor 8×8 is valued at $730 per sub, and cable competitors are close to $2000. Of course, you might consider that most cable bills are a lot more than $25 a month, and that all that plant and equipment and franchise right of way might have some impressive salvage value.
But Vonage could not catch a Wall Street Analyst break. Within days it was trading under $13. Even though, in the words of Cormac O’Reilly of the Register UK, “it service builds on the reality that people rely on their mobile phonefirst ,and use their wired phones as backup, mainly to avoid the expense of long distance.”
I think Bill Mann hit the nail on the head at Motley Fool: Vonage was the most successful IPO in years. Just depends upon how you define success. In this case, he congratulates Vonage management in convincing multiple institutions and individuals to part with their money – in fact $500Million more than the market immediately says that it’s worth. He describes it as “the most successful fundraiser in the history of mankind.”
If you recall a few weeks ago we spent some time discussing Voice 2.0 .The first link two weeks ago was Skype, and the Vonage parade is Act 2.Stay tuned for Act 3.

1. What does this message mean to me and why do I care ?
2. What action, if any, does this message require of me ?
3. What’s the most elegant way to close out this message and the nested action it contains ?
