Frappr, Laptops, and Wiring
by Andrew McCaskey
Quick note over the holiday weekend from Patrick Boyle – who keeps an eagle eye out for security oriented topics.
He provided a pointer to an eWeek article that will remind you to patch your copy of Skype. It seems that early last week, there was a vulnerability that was discovered regarding the transfer of files in Skype that could be triggered by a malicious web site. This is not the recent 105 patch that you probably installed a week or so ago, this is patch 107. Thanks to Patrick for the heads up.
Dropped by the SDR Frappr page, and want to thank some European listeners – TWinkel in the Netherlands, Danny Tsang in the UK, and another Andy – Andy Van DerGuden in Geneva. From the other side of the world, Henrick Van Wyk with profiledITpeople.com in Auckland, NZ and Knightwise from Hanoi, VietNam. Knightwise is the host of the Knightcast Podcast, and has been getting a lot of Digg.com action this weekend with an item called – Ubuntu for Your Grandmother . Step 1 – Find a Grandma, Step 2, Find a Laptop – in this case a 800Mhz Compaq with 256Mb of RAM, then Step 3 – Get a Penguin – combine carefully, and the result is a GrandMa vetted system that isA :Be simple in use.
B: Be safe from malware, viruses, and user mistakes
C: Offer enough software without having to take on a loan to get you started. You may remember a mention on SDR a few weeks ago of the automatix script that loads up all the needed Codecs to Ubuntu.
But the final touch is a configuration that results in four buttons on the screen, and a laptop that is, by design, as simple to use as a toaster.
Hope that you had a good holiday weekend. Main accomplishments here – the big Tivo is now in service, the DirectTV goes directly to the TV instead of backfeeding through the house on Channel 3, and the phones now ring where we thought they should when those wires got re-pulled and re-spliced after that unfortunate accident with the kitchen vent and the saw.
Inbox Zero: One of the guideposts along the way will be some articles from the excellent site for personal productivity at 43 Folders , specifically an article entitled “My email diet” in the Inbox Zero – Day 1series.
From the 43Folders Inbox Zero process, I’m learning that these tools are no substitute for ruthless triage of escalating questions:
1. What does this message mean to me and why do I care ?
2. What action, if any, does this message require of me ?
3. What’s the most elegant way to close out this message and the nested action it contains ?
These questions were most valuable getting from 400 to 100 items. After that, the default
Outlook folder “Unread Items” kept the new stuff in one place – just reading headers and sender lines for easy zapping
