Writely and Skype

A fast trip back to Writely.com to prepare the comments for today. Writely is one of the earliest of the AJAX applications, and it does come in handy to write a few lines on one machine and then at a convenient time and place pull them back off for posting. It seems like I go back and forth trying to determine the best tool for this task. Sometimes the USB drive approach is the ticket, when I need to take some other materials along or have discovered a song on one machine and need to take it to another machine. Other times, I succumb to the quick and dirty approach of creating a draft email in gmail, which I never intend to send – but just go to the other machine and log on and pull it there.
It’s been a number of weeks since I’ve tried the Writely.com route – and it’s a step or two above the gmail approach as far as formatting and so forth – but still missing the Outliner that remains almost the sole reason that I continue to use MSWord in my daily work and AbiWord on most other machines.
You might want to give Writely another look, especially if you are in a distributed environment with colleagues in different locations. Some very nice blog integration – which you would expect given the new and closer coupling to the Googleplex. And, some greatly improved markup that will show multiple revisions and authors, if you have designated a few others in your workgroup as authors for a document. All a part of the universe of applicaitons and techniques that just reflect the changes in how we work and communicate.
Did you get some mileage out of Skype today ? I sure did – I hit SkypeOut and just watch the meter stuck on EU8.14 close to the last time that I filled it up with EU10. That was necessitated by an ill-advised call to a mobile phone of one of my colleagues in the Netherlands – and I forgot about the “Caller Pays” billing system outside of North America. Worked great- and vaporized a EU10 Visa charge with efficiency. With the changes announced yesterday you might exercise some caution. If you are on the receiving end of all those free Skype calls on your cell phone – be mindful of the minutes on your plan as your friends and family discover the world of Skype.
