Fibreglass Disco Track: See The Light [2:54] |
| Comments |
Thanks to Annette Thomson for the past week’s assistance in the postcast hosting world. In the balance, a good week of business travel.
Time to get back on track and see what’s new.
Lots of discussion on the NSA traffic analysis of phone records. One of the issues that listeners may be interested in is some of the technology and concept behind the analysis of social networks. And that is going to lead you to the work of Valdis Krebs.
His site at orgnet.com has an excellent set of white papers – including two that discuss, in detail, the analysis of connections between terrorists directly involved in 9/11 , as well as papers that discuss the spread of SARS that may be of critical importance in any coming pandemic.Another item on a similar topic – has come from the fun site Where’s George? (as in the $1 bill version, not the Secret Service version) – which tracks the dispersion and travels of $1 bills between city pairs and along routes that might likely be duplicated in natural or intentional pandemics.
Krebs is literally Man of the Hour, with interviews in Newsweek
and citations on MSNBC
Here’s what’s interesting in the NewsWeek article: Along with Bruce Schnier, Krebs is going on record that the massive “Tops-Down” sweep now underway may be less productive than a “Bottoms-Up” analysis basically finding a few bad guys and then working upwards. The Tops Down might work but along the way, pick up – in combination with other data such as travel records and financial exchanges – a lethal payload that will haunt us many years down the line.
Sounds like some un-intended consequences in the making.
