This is the last official day of the training session for several hundred of us – an internal four day product fair and training for engineers, program managers and colleagues from all over the world. crash course on all sorts of products and programs. It’s a sometimes frantic effort to use some of this high bandwidth face to face time to renew acquaintances and learn new names and faces – that you spend time with in the virtual world the other 51 weeks of the year.
Another reason this is short – I got detained while reading an article from Rajesh Setty’s Life Beyond Code site called “De-Nerding Your Geeks” from the Australian CIO Magazine.
The article focused on a client facing situation where the customer asked for a quick modification – but in Setty’s absence connected with a team programmer in a hallway conversation.
Here’s the result: “As a result, program director got intricate details of child and parent windows and other jargon the intensely non-technical director could only translate as gobbledygook. That led program director to two misguided but deeply disturbing conclusions: the team was doing something like rocket science, and there was great strife ahead. “I asked him for a simple change. Now it looks like it will take three days and there is a risk to the project,” the program director complained to Setty.”
A very interesting read from both a management standpoint – and for those like me who have a natural inclination to describe watch design and construction when asked for the time.
I am having fun connecting realtime on both accounts, at least for one more day.
