At the Edges
–by Andrew McCaskey
I was working this evening, and saw that fellow TPN podcaster Mark Bradley popped up on Skype. I wanted to wish him well on the trip back to Australia – so I rung him up. Turned out that Skype rolled to his mobile phone, and that he had just stepped off the plane in Sydney, already back on home turf. Elapsed time ? Less than the time to figure out how to direct dial Australia.
In a similar mode, if I need contact with one of the sysadmins from Libsyn, who provide the heavy lifting for the mp3 distribution of SDR, I only have to see if they are online, available – and pass a simple IM to set the stage for the subject of the call.
This set me to thinking about how my communications differs in matters surrounding podcasting and my normal workday.
Your mileage may vary, but I find that comunication with colleagues that are distributed throughout the world consistently goes better with Skype, while those who are factory based rely almost exclusively on the officially blessed phone and data networks. Call attendants, voice mail and email centric collaboration are their pattern of communication and interaction.
From the perspective of the general public, VoIP seems to be all about the value prop – cheaper calls, driven by Vonage like services. Inside the organization, it looks like the uptake will be driven by something even simpler – VoIP offers operational effectiveness, convenience and transparency in day to day teamwork. It’s faster, and mostly better in quality. The only place that it breaks down in in multiple conference calling situations.
The cost advantages drop out quickly. The ability to call the UK or Japan and talk as long as you want quickly loses novelty and appeal. The ability to see if your colleagues are available, contact them instantly, get the question answered and move on is a lasting attraction.
What’s interesting is that the innovation is happening at the edges of the organization, not at the center. I guess that’s a central organizing principal of the internet – put the intelligence on the edges.
