Guide for the Possessed
–by Andrew McCaskey
I came across an interesting page a few days ago for those of you who, like me, continue to be amazed at laptops that go into swap at the slighest provocation. A lot of the production here is still done on a Dell Inspiron 1100, with only 256MB of memory and a 30GB drive about 25GB full. No matter how much I keep swatting down the temp files, cleaning up so that Audacity has some room to breathe, there seem to be all manner of services that just start up.
I’ve been a user of Ace Utilities for years – which does a reasonable job of helping clean the startup programs, but I still see all sorts of blood-sucking memory devouring things added after a few days without a reboot.
The resource that I’ve found is at site called Elder Geek, where there is a very interesting section on XP Services. In a series of concise pages, he covers the Service Name – The name the service is actually called, which is often quite cryptic and then the Process Name – The name of the actual process that shows when the service is activated. he cites the official Microsoft Service Description , Some easily understood while others make no sense at all to the average user(or any other user) . He explains the Default Settings – for the Home and Professional versions of XP when a clean installation is performed. Dependencies, andthen the big question: Is This Service Needed? – There are three choices here and the Elder Geek stress that these are strictly his opinion along with a Recommended Setting -
At least it’s in plainer English than the process names in the Windows Task Manager.
However, The Elder Geek opines , in Red Letters
” Frankly, I don’t recommend you change any of the services from the default installation of XP. Yes, you may pick up a tiny performance gain by fiddling with the settings, but it won’t be anything substantial. It’s just my opinion, but if you are in a situation where these gains are necessary to achieve an increased level of system performance, it would be wiser to upgrade the physical system to one that is adequate to benefit from the XP operating system.”
