Traction, Second Life and 18 Days of Danger
    by Andrew McCaskey

A quick update on the next TechPodcast Network Roundtable: It’s coming up fast, this Saturday June 3 at 1:30PM Pacific.

This edition is, as always, presented by GotoMeeting. Something new this month – we will have a Skypecast in session during the Roundtable, so that you will be able to dial in for free using Skype. On the Agenda:

A discussion on some of the best software tools and sites on the net, from a Podcaster’s perspective.
The main feature will be a realtime demo of the Mackie Traction 2 recording studio, one of the most powerful, and most affordable production tools once a podcaster wants to move to studio software with advanced production capability.

There will be a discussion on promoting your podcast in the Virtual World of Second Life – For those of you who may not know, Second Life is a 3-D virtual world entirely built and owned by its residents. Since opening to the public in 2003, it has grown explosively and today is inhabited by over 200,000 people from around the globe. It has it’s own currency, the Linden dollar, which can be converted to US dollars at several thriving online currency exchanges. Because residents retain the rights to their digital creations, they can buy, sell and trade with other residents. How and why podcasting might have a place here will be a really interesting discussion.

Finally, No Starch Press is providing book give-aways, including
PGP and GPG: Email for the Practical Paranoid .

On other matters, if you want a good laugh, follow the link to the new Wired article called 18 Days of Dangerous Computing -A contest of sorts, to see how quickly a new Dell machine can be pulled to an inoperable state by purposely seeking out spyware, viruses, malware, bots, spam, popups, Kazaa, Warez, torrents and disabling all firewalls, checkers and guard dogs.

The saga continued for 18 days, until the really malicious finale of the story – dropping it off at Best Buy as a Geek Squad challenge. Some people just enjoy the pain of others.

    Recent Items Mentioned:

Inbox Zero: One of the guideposts along the way will be some articles from the excellent site for personal productivity at 43 Folders , specifically an article entitled “My email diet” in the Inbox Zero – Day 1series.

From the 43Folders Inbox Zero process, I’m learning that these tools are no substitute for ruthless triage of escalating questions:

    1. What does this message mean to me and why do I care ?

    2. What action, if any, does this message require of me ?

    3. What’s the most elegant way to close out this message and the nested action it contains ?

These questions were most valuable getting from 400 to 100 items. After that, the default
Outlook folder “Unread Items” kept the new stuff in one place – just reading headers and sender lines for easy zapping

The free 40 page downloadable e-Book from Rajesh Setty, a fellow Gnomedexer.. “Personal Branding for Technology Professionals”, It’s some heavy reality for anyone in the technology arena – especially the IT field or pure technologists.
