Watch These Two

From time to time I get spun up about certain some technology related political issues, and there seems to be a couple of proposed laws that have me scrambling for two things. In the virtual world, I’m scrambling back and forth between the EFF.org site and the Home Recording Rights Coalition site.

This is what’s grabbed my attention :

The PERFORM Act, S. 2644, which was mentioned in an article I just read would prevent satellite radio subscribers from recording and listening to programming that they have paid for – you could not choose the artists and playback order for anything you have recorded for your own, personal use! And it might be introduced in the House as well.

Thrughout the day, if I have music on, it is either from the XM portable plugged into the home stereo or Shoutcast. I don’t think I should be termed a criminal or worse yet a terrorist by recording that material, for time shifted enjoyment in my own home.

It was enough to send me to the Home Recording Rights Coalition site and actually compose an email – not just use the template to my two senators.

To spin me up even further: Congressman Lamar Smith’s (TX) proposed new draft – Intellectual Property Protection Act of 2006, the “New. Improved DMCA” Attorney General Alberto Gonzales commented recently and said such changes are necessary because new technology is “encouraging large-scale criminal enterprises to get involved in intellectual-property theft,” Gonzales said, adding that proceeds from the illicit businesses are used, “quite frankly, to fund terrorism activities.”

Enough said. One more reminder to sign up for the Techpodcasts Roundtable this Saturday at 1:30 Pacific , then back to the news.
