Listening to Howard

Mobile for the next few days, with some family vacation and a return visit to Indianapolis. It’s a three hour drive and the portable XM receiver gets put into service once again.
Other than NPR, at least in our family on long hauls – terrestrial radio is just about irrelevant. Combine, podcasts, some favorites on the iPod from CD’s at home, audiobooks and satellite radio. Other than approaching funnel clouds, there’s no real reason to turn on the radio. I imagine that my experience is duplicated by a lot of listeners. The mix of delivery boxes may be different, but the effect will be the same.

There’s been some word that Howard Stern is quite disappointed that his audience has not followed, en mass, his trip to Sirius Satellite Radio. I can’t imagine that Stern fans have turned into consumers of podcasts in numbers that would move the needle. Or that his style of entertainment has gone out of style, as the FM antics of Bob and Tom and copycat shows move across the dial. What I suspect is that he’s the leading edge, as he has been for many years, of the death by a thousand cuts that will transform the homoginized monolithic radio business over the next ten years, no less than the parallel transformation of the telecommunications industry that we spoke of in Voice 2.0 a few weeks ago.

Todd Cochrane of Geek News Central forwarded an article that said that $10million will be funneled in advertising placement into podcasts, blogs, and RSS advertising in the next 12 months.

Meantime, if you want to hear what radio can become – the podcast at Daily-Journal in Kankakee IL is a sample of the grass root radio that will always be in style , and thanks to podcasting technology is going to have an audience – loyal, growing, and enthusiastic. That’s where the $10million is heading today -and where the $100 million will head next year.

ABC/Disney announces plans to stream hit shows on their site in a form – for free – that prevents skipping commercials. It breaks their business model and relationship with their distribution – but it’s the first “big media” to have the courage and awareness to wake up. Maybe they were listening to Howard Stern.
