New Podcasts at Tech Podcast Network
Comments
–by Andrew McCaskey
There are a number of members and affiliates in the Techpodcast Network, all committed to providing family friendly podcast content on a variety of technology subjects, from all over the world. Just this week, we were joined by two more podcasts.
The first show is Security Bites. That is Bites as in dangerous, not bytes as in computer. Backdoors, pharming, phishing, rootkits, viruses, worms. Feeling vulnerable? The hosts are from CNET News Joris Evers and Robert Vamosi. They tell you about the latest security threats, what’s coming, and how to protect your system Joris has been covering technology for over ten years. It is published weekly, on Fridays.
Jon Homan and his buddy Zack are two college students who publish shows around their schedule – usually one per week.
The Show name is SimplyTech -Everything in technology from computers to home theater systems to cell phones. Recent shows include convergence between home theater and the home network. And some in-depth discussion on home theater audio and visual cables, be it DVI, HDMI, Component, or S-Video. Cables are a very important part of the home theater set-up, and often over looked. As Zach made very clear, a $6,000 HDTV with stock cables does not make sense.
Welcome to both. And if you have a favorite podcast that might be a good addition to the network, drop me a line at SDR{at}gmail.com .
Don’t forget about the ongoing TechPodcast / U3 Developer’s contest. During our March TPN Roundtable, U3 presented some details on the environment that permits applications, profiles and data to be permanently mounted on a USB drive – available to you wherever you can find a Windows based internet connection. The contest, offering a total of $850 in cash prizes, is open to TPN listeners who download the U3 Developer Kit, register by email at contest@techpodcasts.com , and submit their application to U3 by May 15, 2006.
One of the most interesting categories in the competition is Utilities. It’s a reminder that applications do not have to be full of GUI effects or “boil the ocean” monster office suite. A quick hack that will ping a half dozen sites of your choice and alarm when ping times get higher than a threshold might be a very handy addition to the USB office of – sort of like the Konfabulator widgets that are so . . . handy.
