Traffic (As in Freeway) Simulation
–by Andrew McCaskey

Add to Google

I know that this is the last thing that many of you need to hear about in the midst of a commute listening to SDR. But if you were curious about how, if you were king, traffic would really run – just by speeding up that light, or metering an on ramp, traffic simulators Martine Treiber and the site at the TU Dresden 3d traffic simulator will be most entertaining, once you get to the office.

The 2D version, includes on ramps, lane changing, lane closing and similar tweaks – to include some more esoteric parameters such as ramp p factors and inflow on the freeway and ramps.

Some reasons for developing traffic models are

* To simulate the effect of control measures like

o Speed limits

o No passing for trucks, especially at uphill or downhill sections

o Restrictions for lane changing, especially before or at merging regions

o Traffic flow control at on ramps – metering.

* To simulate the influence of vehicles with adaptive cruise-control systems. If an increasing precentage of vehicles has such systems, does traffic become more stable? Can the traffic flow per lane be increased?.

Traffic simulation can contribute to reduce traffic congestions without building new infrastructure.
I know this is all small comfort at the moment – but you will especially like the one option -
The time warp adjustment. Absolutely reduces your commute by a power of ten.
