First Reports on Pamela – Skype Plug-In
Comments
–by Andrew McCaskey
I’m not sure that I have a full report on Pamela, the plug in from Skype from Pamela Systems – but I will let you know some of what I’m learning.
I did the install on one of the XP boxes today, and on Skype calls to the UK, Belgium and Texas there seemed to be a periodic echo that was distracting at best, aggravating most of the time, on the called party coming back this way – never on my end as the originating party.
But, I’m learning more about the application and a few things that I think that I am going to like. First of all, there is a chat window robot for Skype that allows you to set different status messages for different inviduals that might call – telling one that you are not available, as standard sort of message – telling another contact “I’m not here, call John on his mobile he knows the situation, while telling a third to hit you on SMS with the info for the meeting.
Pamela will just sit there, and respond with the right message to the right person at the right time. There are similar opportunities to set things up for voice messages as well with selective messages for different contacts – in various languages, if desired,
It’s all part of the Voice 2.0 idea of presence: That in signaling your readiness or ability to render attention you add value to ongoing conversations and move communications value up the scale, in either a commercial or personal context.
I’ll keep experimenting, and if you’d like to extend your Skype capability you can download an evaluation copy from Pamela-Systems.com
I first became aware of Pamela as an application for the U3 portable app environment, and once I get things rung out on the one box, I want to begin to think about how Pamela could be useful in the portable environment with Skype and the Attendant with full personalization carried about on the GeekSquad keychain. If you are just joining us this week, there is a contest for TPN listeners, with over $800 in cash prizes for developers who port their applications to the U3 USB drive.
U3,as you know, enables USB drives like the GeekSquad Series from Best Buy to contain applications, data, configurations and passwords. These prizes will be awarded to TPN listeners who download the U3 SDK and port their application to the U3 environment and are selected by a panel of judges.
Go to U3.com, register, and download the U3 Deployment Kit, which includes the SDK and other Developer information. You will receive a confirmation email from U3 with a Username and Developer Company ID number. Cut and paste that into an email along with your contact information and email it to contest@techpodcasts.com .
That’s it – you are officially entered in the contest, and officially equiped with the tools you need to port your application to the U3 environment. You can submit up to three entries, one per category by email at any time prior to May 15, 2006.
The complete rules and entry detailsIt’s going to be fun !

The book that I spoke about on 3/2 is called “Amusing Ourselves to Death” .
The preface to the book gives a good idea of the basic premise, and specific comments on television. (Remember, this was in the early 1980′s .. the hundred channel universe was not yet revealed )
A more lengthy summary is found at WikiPedia.
Interactive Touchscreen Demo: a video of a really cool touchscreen interface – about ten times better than the Bill Gates demo at CES. Hard to describe, about three minutes long.
