Ajax Write – First Impressions
–by Andrew McCaskey

Add to Google

The dust has finally settled and the Slashdotting is apparently over as servers play catch-up at the site called Ajaxwrite.com . As you may recall from the article yesterday, this is the latest “disruptive technology” venture from Michael Robertson, late of Mp3.com, Lindows, (now Linspire), Sipphone.com, Gizmo Project and so forth.

It is a freely available implementation of a Microsoft Word compatible word processor that pops up in about ten seconds into your browser. On the theory that most people use about 10% of the capabilities and features of MS Word, it’s one more confirmation, along with the acquisition of Writely by Google that the world of hosted applications or downloadable app frameworks is set to provide a challenge to the way that we have thought applications in daily use.

It’s earning it’s beta level reputation- most obvious annoyance being the printing of one page, and my pet peeve – extending to Open Office and AbiWord, both of which I use daily – the omission of the MS Word Outliner. However – my wife found it just the ticket , to pop up a familiar application UI and add a few lines to an existing document. I’m a bit more skeptical, as I am really liking the U3 USB drive stick where I know the app and data is not going to leave a trail of temp files. As I understand the AjaxWrite program, once the app downloads, there is no need for a connection and all storage is on the local machine. But it still makes me a little nervous – basically fear of the unknown.

Looks like Robertson has the rest of the MS Office suite up his sleeve. He’s promising release of a new app per week and if nothing else, is going to have the sense of anticipation with each release. I’m looking forward to seeing what happens in about three months – to see if the bugs get fixed and if it moves into prime time.

Don’t forget that you can get Slashdotreview by email, with a built in flash player, arriving in your email inbox each day. Just sign up for the free FeedBlitz service in the box at the bottom of each day’s posting. Plus you can then forward that email, and introduce someone new to podcasting to SDR – without having to explain a thing.

The book that I spoke about on 3/2 is called “Amusing Ourselves to Death” .

The preface to the book gives a good idea of the basic premise, and specific comments on television. (Remember, this was in the early 1980′s .. the hundred channel universe was not yet revealed )

Interactive Touchscreen Demo: a video of a really cool touchscreen interface – about ten times better than the Bill Gates demo at CES. Hard to describe, about three minutes long.
