Classical Dilemma Part II + Tags
–by Andrew McCaskey

I had several emails from listeners, noticing that the last few days that the Genre has changed to Blues rather than Podcast. I have been experimenting with adding in a photo into the id3 tags for the past two days, and I thought that I was writing it out properly. Obviously not. The default for that program is Blues – which I had overwritten in the gui and pushed the Write Tag button – but did not verify on the other end. I will go back to the manual method and get the podcast tag put back in.

Just quickreminder that the Portable Media Expo registration has opened with the maximum savings admission for the next six weeks or so. A very worthwhile show if you have interest in the world of podcasting, Sept. 29 and 30, 2006 in Ontario, CA.

You may recall the classical dilemma from a few days ago: Some suggestions from listeners: Rob Payne said “Have you considered recommending the audio book format (m4b)? It would allow “chapters” (movements) within the symphony, and randomizing across symphonies.”

Also word from the id3.org folks, the id3 Chapter Frame might be useful as well. ID3 Chapter (CHAP) and Table of Contents (CTOC) Frames were developed in response to the growth in audio files containing more than one distinct audio program. Podcasts are an example of a single audio file which may contain multiple tracks, stories or other distinct audio entries. Only problem is that the players that can read and make playlist decisions on the tags don’t seem to yet exist.

The preface to the book gives a good idea of the basic premise, and specific comments on television. (Remember, this was in the early 1980′s .. the hundred channel universe was not yet revealed )

Interactive Touchscreen Demo: a video of a really cool touchscreen interface – about ten times better than the Bill Gates demo at CES. Hard to describe, about three minutes long.
