A real gem arrived by email today, from co-host Annette Thomson: A Monthly Newsletter called ‘The Filter” : The public-interest Internet news and commentary from the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard Law School.

Each month they take reader questions ,and then offer expert commentary from the Berkman Center:
This month’s featured question, “Why is it OK to tape a song off the radio, but not the same song off a friend’s CD?

The short answer is that , under the Betamax ruling of 1984 the Supreme Court ruled that “Because time-shifting is non-commercial, socially beneficial, and unlikely to
harm the market for copyrighted works, it constitutes ‘fair use’. The Court’s arguments can reasonably be applied to recording for personal use from the radio as well. ” Conversely on the topic of copying a track from your friends CD ” . . most copyright owners take the position that it is illegal under most circumstances. For example, in Napster, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals
held that sharing music on P2P networks is not fair use because it substituted for purchases of works. ”

The newsletter features scores of links to legal and regulatory issues - as well as the links to audio downloads of speakers . For example there is a talk well over an hour on TOR, a system that” aims to defend against traffic analysis, a form of network surveillance that threatens personal anonymity and privacy, confidential business activities and relationships, and state security.”

Lots of good, interesting material -
Digital Media, Internet Governance, Citizen Media, Internet Politics, Global Conversations, and Blogging.

The book that I spoke about on 3/2 is called “Amusing Ourselves to Death” .

The preface to the book gives a good idea of the basic premise, and specific comments on television. (Remember, this was in the early 1980′s .. the hundred channel universe was not yet revealed )

A more lengthy summary is found at WikiPedia.
Interactive Touchscreen Demo: a video of a really cool touchscreen interface – about ten times better than the Bill Gates demo at CES. Hard to describe, about three minutes long.
